We have been looking at different countries around the world and their culture and celebrations. We have been comparing them to the ones we have here in New Zealand.
Ciara - France has snowy mountains like here in Queenstown where people ski. They also have a big tower, which they use to shoot fireworks off when they are celebrating things, just like we do with the Sky Tower. In France there are canal boats, which are a different shape from the boats here in New Zealand.
Micheal - Greeks eat lots of seafood. They eat more seafood than we do. The priests dress up in special robes. Church leaders here in New Zealand sometimes dress up in special clothes, but not always.
Iona - Some countries celebrate Winter Festivals, I think they might do this in England. We do not celebrate Winter.
Justin - the children in Italy go to school, just like us.
Johann - in Spain they have lots of big beaches. We also have beaches, but maybe not as big.
Mack - in Pakistan they have a flag-changing ceremony. I don't think we have one here in New Zealand.
Ji-Ho - Divali is a festival in India.
Sam - On St. Patricks Day in Ireland they put green dye in the lake to make it green. We don't do that here, although Mrs Martel has seen green beer on St. Patrick's Day here in New Zealand.
Laura - found out that when we turn 100 it is very special and sometimes people get a letter from the Queen. There are music festivals in Europe where children sing. We also have singing festivals here in New Zealand.
Joshua - In South India Christmas is celebrated in January. We always have Christmas in December.
Jahnvi - in South Africa ,when the children come home from school, they get firewood and put it under a pot to cook their food and they climb trees to get fruit. We don't have to climb a tree to get our fruit and we don't have to make a fire to cook our food.

Room 17's Magic Journey to the Amazon
Room 17 were learning all about the jungle. We had been reading lots of books and finding out what animals lived in the jungle. We decided to go on a field trip to the Amazon! We all climbed onto the magic couch and pushed the red button. Once the button was pushed we whoosed through the air until we landed with a huge thump on the ground.
We looked around and we could see piranha jumping in the water. They were being chased by some beautiful pink river dolphins. We looked to the jungle and saw three golden snakes slithering up a tree, some tiny monkeys swinging on the vines, they were screeching and squawking noisily, some dart frogs sitting on what we thought was a log. Then the log moved and we realised that it was a big, scary, spiky crocodile. It made an enormous splash as it started to move towards us on the bank of the river. Iona screamed a terrrified scream. It was sliding up the river bank and had almost reached where Justin and Rion lay unconscious. Ewan and Patrick grabbed them by the legs and pulled them to safety.
We were all so scared, terrified, frightened and excited all at the same time. We decided to learn about the Amazon from the safety of our classroom, so we all rushed back to the magic couch and whoosed back to Room 17. Phew, we were safe, but we were also fascinated by what we had seen. We might make a return journey next week.

Year 3 Beach Trip
Wow - what a fantastic day we all had. A BIG thank you to all the parents who came and helped out! We had lots of fun playing on the playground, building sand sculptures, swimming in the sea (not as cold as we expected) and then playing on the field with frisbees, balls and other equipment. Although the sun did not come out, it wasn't cold and we were glad not to get too burnt!!
